Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Consumer Health Supervisor, conduct health and safety inspections and enforce health and food safety codes. Identify hazards and examine conditions as they affect public health and reduce public health risks through enforcing city, state, and federal codes and regulations. Promote and integrate the city’s principles of True NORTH in all areas of job operation (Noteworthy Essentials, Organizational Excellence, Remarkable Experiences, Together as One, and Health Economy).
Examples Of Work To Be Performed
Conduct routine health inspections, checking sanitary conditions, equipment, and operating procedures at food establishments, temporary food events, grocery stores, convenience stores, commercial childcare, and review residential and commercial swimming pools and spas. Some weekend and/or inspections for Special Events will be required.
Ensures compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local consumer and environmental health regulations. Determines appropriate and efficient methods to abate unsanitary conditions
Conduct walk-through inspections on job sites while under construction to assess compliance with all health codes and ordinances.
Analyzes information and data regarding assigned territory to determine the most effective and efficient use of time and resources in conducting assignments.
Investigates complaints filed by the public regarding consumer or environmental health issues; conducts investigations of food, water-borne, or vector-related illnesses
Assist with epidemiological investigations into food-borne illnesses as needed.
Prepare, process, and issue notices and citations.
Investigate complaints; respond to and resolve inquiries
Prepare detailed and accurate reports of various inspections and investigations performed and the results of such inspections and investigations
Recommend ordinance revisions and additions.
Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Assist with special projects, which include performing research, preparing reports, and conducting surveys.
Conduct plans examinations of new and remodeled food and childcare facilities, swimming pools and spas, hotels and motels, and mobile food trucks.
Conducts consumer and environmental health education programs to the public regarding proper food handling, illness prevention and sanitation, and pool operation and maintenance, as well as various consumer and environmental health procedures.
Performs other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of regulations, principles, and techniques relating to environmental and public health.
Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and prepare clear and concise reports.
Required Education, Training, And Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, including at least thirty (30) semester hours or its equivalent in a basic or applied science per the Texas Administrative Code (TAC)
Skilled individuals in this field, who have completed the required FDA training (both classroom and on-the-job), and have experience doing environmental health inspections, might be eligible for special consideration for the position.
Must pass the State of Texas Sanitarian examination within six months of employment. If not currently a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Texas. If selected, individuals can meet requirements.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Registered Sanitarian in Training Registration within six months of hire, and a valid Texas Professional Sanitarian (R.S.) within two years of hire.
Valid Texas driver’s license.
Desired Training And Experience
Two years of increasingly responsible consumer health, regulatory or related experience.
Texas Department of State Health Services Registered Sanitarian License
Designated Representative License from TCEQ (OSSF).

Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
Stooping. Bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist.
Kneeling. Bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on the knee or knees.
Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending the leg and spine.
Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing. Particularly for sustained periods.
Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Feeling. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make sound discriminations.
Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
The Physical Requirements Of This Position
~ Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

~ The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned (i.e., custodial, food services, general laborer, etc.) or to make general observations of facilities or structures

~ Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.
